The Guardian programme (GP) aims to groom young academics into exceptional professionals in their fields by addressing gaps that exist when it comes to practical exposure, interview proficiency, work ethic, and career planning. The programme encompasses mentorship, industry tours, interview preparation, work ethic and behaviour training, career guidance, entrepreneurship, and graduate profiling. The program enhances participants' knowledge, skills, and employability fostering their personal and professional growth and development enabling them to make meaningful contributions in their chosen fields and subsequently become exceptional leaders.

Students attend career expos for industry insights and are assigned mentors to help navigate their career pathways.

Work ethic & behavior

Students attend virtual training sessions led by industry HR professionals to learn about work ethic, appropriate workplace behavior, reputation building, and applying emotional intelligence.

We promote students' profiles on our website and social media planforms to connect them with job opportunities.

Programme background

Guardian Programme: Grooming Future Professionals

The Guardian programme started as an idea to bring University final-year chemistry students for industrial visits to the uMngeni-uThukela water testing laboratory. This initiative was to assist students to be able to link the theory they learned in class with its practical use in the working industry. This idea came about after the realization that there is a significant gap between educational institutions and organizations in terms of preparing students to successfully migrate from the former to the latter. The programme expanded to cover more basic skills required by organizations but not offered by educational institutions such as mentorship, interview preparation, work ethic and behavior training, career guidance, entrepreneurship, graduate profiling,
